A Decade on,the best way for you to commute in the city would be by public transport. The government has been told to prepare for mass transit systems and increase parking rates to tackle the pressure of a population of around 2.4 crore by 2021.
On Monday, the Delhi Cabinet in principle approved a Transport Demand and Forecast Study as well as Development of Public Transport Network report put forth by RITES on which all plans for road development and transport till year 2021 will be based. All departments including the PWD and transport will have to follow this study closely, said Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta.
RITES has suggested that to cater to such a huge population a mass transport system will be required. The present 173 km of Metro and 39 km of BRT will not be adequate to cater to the growing transport demand, the report states. To meet the pressure on its roads,Delhi will need 370 km of BRT,says the study. Different variants of the BRT design in terms of its cross-sectional elements and elevated sections should be adopted to meet varying levels of demand, the study said, adding that an additional 149 km of Metro and 40 km of monorail will also be required.
The report has recommended that the government should levy higher parking charges in central areas and consider congestion taxes and restriction of car ownerships. To discourage personal transport, the report has even suggested an increase in fuel rates.
The daily intra-city motorised person trips are expected to increase from 117 lakh in 2007 to 174 lakh in 2021. The Intercity trips will increase more sharply from 33.4 lakh per day in 2007 to 79.6 lakh per day in 2021.
The study has also suggested that since traffic flow from Delhis satellite towns will increase sharply, there should be two corridors each connecting Gurgaon,Ghaziabad,Noida,Greater Noida,Faridabad and Bahadurgarh. Dedicated commuter rail service will also be required connecting Delhi with NCR towns such as Panipat,Sonepat,Rewari,Alwar,Meerut,Hapur,Bulandshahr and Palwal. The RITES study has suggested that additional road links are mandatory between Delhi and Gurgaon along with the two being used now. The report has also stressed on that Eastern and Western Expressways should be provided at the earliest.
