After strong winds and light rainfall in Delhi till late Saturday evening, overcast skies and a drizzle are expected to persist on Sunday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Gusty winds of around 40 to 50 kmph prevailed on Saturday, bringing the maximum temperature down to 25.2 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal, and well below the 29.6 degrees recorded on Friday.
The Safdarjung weather station, the city’s base observatory, recorded 0.8 mm of rainfall till 5.30 pm, while the observatory at Rajghat recorded 5 mm, and the Ridge, near Delhi University, recorded 3.6 mm.
A western disturbance that lies over eastern Afghanistan has been affecting northwest India, with widespread rainfall or snowfall expected to continue over the western Himalayan region till Sunday, according to the IMD. This brought light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds to other parts of northwest India as well, including parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
While cloudy skies and a drizzle in the morning hours are on the forecast for Delhi on Sunday, the next week, from March 4 to 8, could remain dry. The maximum temperature is likely to range from 25 to 27 degrees, and the minimum temperature, which was 18.2 degrees (five degrees above normal) on Saturday, could remain at around 11 or 12 degrees from March 4 to 8.
The normal maximum temperature for the first week of March in Delhi is around 27.4 degrees Celsius, while the normal minimum temperature is around 13.4 degrees Celsius. For March, the normal amount of rainfall, calculated as a long-period average, in Delhi is 17.4 mm.
Another western disturbance is set to affect the western Himalayan region from March 5 onwards.
At an IMD briefing for the upcoming summer season on Friday, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra had said that consecutive western disturbances are expected to affect the Himalayan region and the adjoining plains till the second week of March, and no heatwave conditions are expected over the area in March.
