In a light vein
Minister for Environment and Forests,Jairam Ramesh, holding forth in Parliament, made sure,in signature style, that he had everyone’s attention — peppering his long extempore with jokes and pokes at other MPs. Commenting on how many young MPs had joined the Parliament debate on climate change,Ramesh, nevertheless, had advice for the younger generation. “Jayant Chaudhary,” he said, referring to the young MP’s perspective on climate change,“don’t be so bold at so young an age. Thinking out of the box doesn’t pay off in our country! Go with the grain. You can think out of the box for a little while, and then come right back,” he said. But apart from the jokes,or perhaps because of them,Ramesh also made an embarrassing faux pas. “India’s per capita income will never exceed that of the developed world,” he declaimed, before realising his mistake, and hastily substituting ‘income’ with ‘emissions’.

No time for school meals
With more than hundred children falling ill after consuming the midday meal at a government-run school in Trilokpuri, the Education department was again left red-faced. Even as parents kept praying for the wellbeing of their wards,a senior official at the Education department had a good way of warding off questions. “It is nothing. It happens, when one child vomits, others too feel like an urge to vomit. It is a reaction.” Having said this,he added,“Midday meals should be stopped. It wastes a lot of time for both students and teachers.” In fact,he even suggested that midday meals should be suspended.

Truant doctors
With the number of AIIMS-related court cases increasing every day,a judge hearing a case regarding appointments at the Central Administrative Tribunal noted that most AIIMS doctors can now be practising lawyers as well. “When exactly do you see patients? Most of the doctors are in court throughout the day,” noted the judge. A doctor is reported to have said that AIIMS students are taking care of the patient load while the faculty is out settling other scores.

Style statement
St Stephen’s College administrators have been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The students,on the other hand, have stayed true to their reputation of not being interested in active party politics by not even bothering to find out what the fuss was all about. When their teachers got into the protest mode last Thursday, they did it in style. The teachers’ protest outside the CNI Bishop’s House,in a first, was coordinated by a PR agency. Press releases,photo-ops,well-thought-out quotes and innovative placards lit up the winter evening.

Price of friendship
Three members of the court staff at Tis Hazari court found themselves in trouble over an apparently “innocuous” act of accompanying a lawyer, who wanted to go through a few court records. When judges on a sudden inspection asked two employees as to why they were standing and helping the lawyer see the case files without permission for inspection, they had no answer. The judges then did not delay getting showcause notices typed out against all of them. Minutes after receiving the notice, one of them regretted that he did not say ‘no’ to his colleagues and agreed to show the file in “good faith.”

On the run
With the Commonwealth Games inching closer,BJP leaders like Vijay Goel have started expressing their concern at the government’s ‘unpreparedness’ for the big event. Despite being part of the Organising Committee for the Commonwealth Games and having the opportunity to voice his concerns at its meeting,Goel has chosen to launch a public campaign to keep the Committee on its toes. He has organised a run. On being quizzed,Goel said,“We don’t want last-minute surprises when nothing can be done. So we are raising an alert right away.”

Is this being responsible,or running away from responsibility?

Poster perfect
The opposition Congress and the ruling BJP in the MCD seem to have locked horns over the money spent on Corporation advertisements. Last week,Congress members accused the BJP of “wasting” funds for publicity on senior BJP leaders, adding that in the run-up to the Assembly polls last year, the BJP had tried to project Leader of Opposition V K Malhotra as CM candidate. The argument also led to the adjournment of several MCD House meetings but to no avail. Congress members have now come up with a new plan to “get back” at BJP members. It has decided to hold 15 inauguration ceremonies in the coming week. “Posters of these ceremonies will carry pictures of our party members and only then will the BJP get it,” a Congress member fumed.

‘Model’ cop stumped
Delhi Police officers are constantly puzzled by the ways of Jawaharlal Nehru University. While a few days ago, they could not enter the campus, this week,Dhaliwal had to return somewhat embarrassed at the attention he got. While JNU students were agitating last week demanding a ‘public trial’ for four persons who allegedly misbehaved with a female student on campus, the dapper DCP,South district,H G S Dhaliwal was busy trying to counsel them this week “not to take law in their hands”. It was then that a few female students reportedly told Dhaliwal,“You should have been a model and not a cop.” Dhaliwal beat a hasty retreat.
