The State Election Commission on Saturday said that it has started preparations to hold bypolls to fill vacancies in 12 Wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The vacancies occurred after one councillor was elected to the Parliament and 11 others were elected as Members of the Delhi Assembly earlier this year.

These 12 wards are Shalimar Bagh B, Dwarka B, Mundka, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Dichaon Kala, Naraina, Sangam Vihar, Dakshin Puri, Greater Kailash and Vinod Nagar.

In a statement issued to the media, the Commission said that under Section 7(E) of the Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, the electoral rolls made for the February Assembly polls will be followed for the bypolls as well. “All supplements subsequently prepared up to the last date for filing nominations for the bypolls shall also form part of the electoral rolls in the 12 wards,” it added.

The Commission said returning officers of the 12 wards have been requested to finalise polling stations of these wards by October 13. A notice has also been issued inviting suggestions/objections from the general public, it added.

The Commission further said that a meeting was held with the Delhi Commissioner of Police on Saturday to review the security as well as law and order situation for the smooth conduct of the bypolls. It added that it will deploy expenditure observers to oversee the bypolls.

“The Commission will be holding a meeting shortly with the Chief Secretary to ensure seamless arrangement… It will set the election schedule after a thorough review of festivals, exams, local logistics as well as law and order considerations,” the statement said.
