Delhi News Live Updates: Working on mission mode to ensure no waterlogging this monsoon: Delhi minister Parvesh Verma

PWD minister Parvesh Verma on Saturday said the Delhi government is working on mission mode to ensure no waterlogging occurs this monsoon season.

Verma who inspected a drain in Sriniwaspuri area said that there will be "transparency" in the water distribution system under the BJP government.

"The previous government and the local MLA (Atishi) did absolutely nothing. But we don't look at whose constituency it is. Our aim is to work in every part of Delhi," said Verma.

The main drain in Sriniwaspuri has remained blocked for years, and last year, water up to four feet deep entered several houses in the locality, the minister said.

"A work order for desilting the drain will be issued within a week, and cleaning work will commence immediately. Officials have been strictly directed to record videos of the cleaning process to ensure actual on-ground progress, not just paperwork," said the PWD and water minister.

As per the government's plan, MCD will begin desilting of the Sriniwaspuri drain from its starting point near East of Kailash and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will clean all construction and demolition waste and debris before before April 19. — PTI

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday appealed to citizens to avoid throwing food on roads and urged them to feed animals responsibly to help keep streets safe and avoid traffic disruption.

During an inspection in the city, CM Gupta noticed a man tossing a 'chapati' onto the road. She stopped her car and requested him not to repeat the act.

"I saw someone throwing chapatis on the road, possibly to feed stray cows. I stopped and gently asked him not to do that again," she said.

The chief minister said that stray cows and other animals are drawn to roads in search of food, which can cause traffic disruption and increase the risk of accidents.

"If you wish to feed animals, please do so at designated shelters or goshalas. This reflects our compassion, responsibility, and cultural values," she said.

Delhi Live Updates: Girl stabbed in Delhi Cantt initially threatened to kill accused, reveals police

The teenage girl who was stabbed multiple times in Delhi Cantonment had initially threatened the accused with death, police revealed on Friday.

This development comes after the police took the statement of the accused, Amit (20), who was admitted to a hospital after inflicting multiple wounds on the girl's stomach and neck as well as on himself on April 6 evening.

According to police, the stabbing incident was triggered after the accused spotted a new dress in the girl's bag, leading to a fight between them.

A senior police officer on Friday said that when the accused asked the victim not to take gifts from other boys, the girl allegedly said, "Tum kya kar loge agar mai lu? Zyada bologe to tumhe marwa dungi (What will you do if I take it? If you talk too much, I'll get you killed.)" Enraged and intimidated by the threat, Amit planned to end her life and when she called him to meet her at the bus stop. He allegedly took a knife with him.

After stabbing the girl, Amit also stabbed himself in the stomach, the officer said, adding that he is now out of danger and shifted to the hospital ward.

The police have taken his statement and are waiting to corroborate it with the victim, who has been admitted to ICU again after initially being taken out of it. — PTI

Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana allegedly said the Indians “deserved it" and commended the nine LeT terrorists killed during the attack, suggesting that they should be given "Nishan-e-Haider”, Pakistan's highest gallantry award, according to the US Department of Justice.

Tahawwur Rana India Extradition Live Updates: 26/11 Mumbai attacks: Tahawwur Rana likely devised similar plans for other cities, NIA to court

The National Investigation Agency on April 10 argued in a Delhi court that it suspects terror plots akin to 26/11 Mumbai attacks were devised by key conspirator Tahawwur Rana to target multiple Indian cities.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) made the claim before special judge Chander Jit Singh, who remanded Rana to 18-day NIA custody.

In its order, the judge directed the NIA to conduct medical examination of Rana every 24 hours, and allow him to meet his lawyer every alternate day.

The judge allowed Rana to use only a soft-tip pen and meet his lawyer in the presence of the NIA officials within an audible distance.

During the arguments, the NIA said Rana's custody was required to piece together the full scope of the conspiracy, and submitted he was required to be taken to various locations for retracing the events that took place 17 years ago.

"His (Rana) prolonged custody has been deemed necessary to facilitate an extensive interrogation aimed at uncovering deeper layers of the conspiracy. We suspect that the tactics used in the Mumbai attacks were intended for execution in other cities as well, prompting investigators to examine whether similar plots were developed elsewhere," the NIA is believed to have informed the judge, a source said. — PTI

The prosecution team will also comprise advocates Sanjeevi Sheshadri and Sridhar Kale aside from the NIA counsel, it is learnt. The turning point in the extradition case came in May 2023. Rana's trial had begun in 2018.

"The most important decision of his extradition came on May 16, 2023, being the first judgment by the Magistrate Judge, US District Court of Central District of California," said a source close to the extradition proceedings.

The Magistrate Court while allowing the extradition confirmed Krishnan's opinion -- he argued that Rana's case was not of double jeopardy. (With inputs from PTI)

Tahawwur Rana India Extradition Live Updates: Credit should go to UPA government, not PM Modi, alleges Congress

With Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana being extradited from the US, the Congress Thursday said the Modi government did not initiate the process, instead it benefited from the "mature, consistent and strategic diplomacy" that begun under the UPA.

Congress leader and former Home Minister P Chidambaram said the government did not secure any breakthrough to make the extradition possible, nor is it the result of any grandstanding.

Chidambaram added that it was a testament to what the Indian state can achieve when diplomacy, law enforcement and international cooperation are pursued sincerely and without any kind of chest-thumping.

"While the Modi government is rushing to take credit for this development, the truth is far from their spin," Chidambaram said in a statement.

This extradition is the culmination of a decade-and-a-half of painstaking diplomatic, legal and intelligence efforts which were initiated, led, and sustained by the UPA government in close coordination with the United States, he said.

Tahawwur Rana India Extradition Live Updates: Rana extradition big win for India, Pak-based conspirators too must be exposed, says 26/11 survivor

Devika Rotawan, a survivor of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks, said on Thursday that the extradition of key accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana from the US was a big win for India and demanded other conspirators holed up in Pakistan be also exposed and brought to book.

Rotawan, a key witness in the 26/11 case who identified terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Kasab (the lone surviving attacker) in court during the trial, sought capital punishment for Rana (64).

At just nine years old, Rotawan was caught in the crossfire at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai, one of the sites attacked by terrorists on the night of November 26, 2008. She was struck by a bullet in her leg. Her testimony was crucial in the trial of Kasab, who was later convicted by a Mumbai court for his role in the attacks and hanged in 2012.

Talking about Rana's extradition to India, Rotawan, now 25, said she was happy that India has got one of the conspirators of the terror strikes to face justice in the country.

"This is a big win for India, and I want to thank the Indian government for this achievement. With Rana being brought to India to face justice, it is the beginning of the end of terrorism in India, " Rotawan said, as quoted by PTI.
