Delhi heats up again, but rain on the horizon

It seems Delhi and neighbouring states are being singled out for special treatment this summer.

It seems Delhi and neighbouring states are being singled out for special treatment this summer. According to latest meteorological data, except these handful of states, the rest of the country, from the Andamans to Orissa and the Northeastern states, have been lashed by rain over the past few days.

In Delhi, however, the heat wave was back on Saturday with temperatures touching 44.5 degrees. On Sunday, the maximum temperature remained the same.

The Met Department now predicts rain might make a guest appearance in Delhi in the next 48 hours. “There is a Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir that will result in thundersqualls in the city,” said the Officer on Duty at the Safdarjung Met Department.

According to an official, another Western Disturbance will brew over Jammu and Kashmir around May 27. “If that is strong enough,Delhi might get more rain. Anyway, despite the extremely hot days, the night temperatures have fallen due to the Western Disturbance. On Saturday morning, the temperature was above 30 degrees Celsius, but today it was down to 25.6,” the official said. Monday is expected to have a day temperature of 45 degrees Celsius,he added.

But for some real rain Delhi will have to wait till monsoons reach the city in the end of June. The IMD has not yet predicted the exact date. “Let the monsoon enter Kerala first. Then as it progresses,we can make predictions for the rest of the country,” IMD director B P Yadav told Newsline.

During the monsoon,Delhi receives around 225 mm of rain in both June and July. That is the only time the city sees so much rain. The month of May receives around 17 mm rainfall, but this year even that has been deficient so far.
