Several leaders of political parties and senior journalists on Saturday resolved to push for an amendment in the Representation of the People Act,1950,to include ‘paid news’ within the ambit of electoral malpractices.

At a seminar organised by the Indian Women’s Press Corps,Editors’ Guild of India,Press Association and the Broadcast Editors’ Association of India at the Constitution Club, the speakers expressed concern over the phenomenon of ‘paid news’ undermining the electoral politics.

Narrating her encounters with mediapersons who offered “packaged” coverage,BJP leader Sushma Swaraj claimed that she had evidence against certain media houses and the Election Commission should take action against them.

CPM leader Prakash Karat, advocating for paid news to be declared as an electoral malpractice, said the EC,by banning posters, had unwittingly raised campaign expenses and forced candidates to look for other methods of publicity. Rajdeep Sardesai,Editor-in-Chief of the IBN18 network, moderated the discussion.
