At their half-yearly press conference held recently,Delhi Police chief Y S Dadwal claimed the city’s crime rate has gone down this year. Newsline takes a look at the figures the police disclosed and the city’s crime graph. (The figures are updated in accordance with the Delhi Police’s latest records)

* The instances of offences punishable under the Indian Penal Code have declined by 3.01 per cent while instances of heinous crime committed have gone down by 7.46 percent in Delhi this year.

* The city police has recorded 251 murder cases this year while,in 2007-2008,a total of 266 murder cases were recorded.  The number of attempt to murder cases too has decreased by 6 percent this year.

* The police station-wise break-up shows that no murder case has been reported in 37 police stations in Delhi.

* Cases of theft have also shown a marginal decrease. The police recorded a total of 257 theft cases this year,while last year,260 cases had been registered.

* Rape and molestation cases have also gone down — 226 cases of rape and 257 cases of molestation were registered this year against 259 and 260 cases registered last year respectively.

* In an exception,instances of snatching registered this year have increased by 13.25 per cent.

* Motor vehicle thefts have also shown an increase of 10.75 per cent this year.

* As part of its new tenant and domestic help verification drives,the Delhi Police covered 5,43,454 houses and checked 76,491 helps. It was found that around 20,000 domestic helps had been employed without having been verified by the police.

* The Delhi Police received about 9,055 obscene calls this year. Out of them,7,415 were taken up immediately and necessary action taken.

* The police also received 1,228 complaints against recovery agents. Of these,1,034 cases were “handled successfully”,the police claim. Seven cases have been registered and eight persons arrested so far regarding the same.
