The gang of 21 women pickpockets, arrested in July this year for repeated thefts inside Metro trains,is now out on bail. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, however, are keeping keen watch over Delhis rapid transport system to stem cases of thefts.
We have photographed the usual suspects people who have earlier been caught for pickpocketing. The gang of 21 women who were caught four months ago are also out on bail now and back to travelling by Metro. But catalogs have been sent to all stations, and if any of these people are spotted taking the Metro, they are stopped, a senior CISF official said.
Together with Delhi Police and DMRC security, the usual suspects are stopped, interrogated and adequate measures taken by the agencies to minimise the growing instance of pickpocketing in the Metro. Officials are taking these measures under Section 268 of the Indian Penal Code to avoid any public nuisance. In several cases, people who have committed the crime once and reappeared, officials levy a penalty of Rs 200.
From June till November this year, cases have been registered against 29 people for pickpocketing. A total of 73 people have been apprehended by the CISF for the crime.
Apart from thefts, cases of eve-teasing are also on a rise in the Delhi Metro, even after the CISF and police agencies in Delhi and NCR conducted an extensive drive codenamed Operation Majnu in August.
Eve-teasing cases are on a rise, specially in the Noida and Gurgaon, which caters to the IT industry and women passengers travel late at night. There have been several cases where the women have complained of fellow male passengers stalking them, the official said.
He said in cases like these, the men are stopped at the stations by the security agencies. From June till November 30 this year,236 male passengers were asked to get off Metro trains for travelling the the coach reserved for women. Cases were booked against 25 passengers in this period.
