Charulata Encore

Satyajit Ray immortalised the story of a lonely housewife in his classic Charulata.

Satyajit Ray immortalised the story of a lonely housewife in his classic Charulata (1964). Something in Charulata’s desire to go beyond the strictures of the society, resonates in the life of modern Indian women even after so many decades. This made Sangeeta Padmanabhan adapt a short story by AS Priya as her first short film,Charulathayude Bakki (Charulata: A Sequel of the Life Untold). This 22-minute-long Malayalam film — which bagged several awards including the special jury award at International Film Festival of India in Goa last year — will be screened as part of the ongoing film Habitat Film Festival today.

“I was tempted to adapt this story that takes off from Ray’s Charulata,” she says. Her film revolves around Amritha (Padmapriya),who is in love with a man interested in making films. Amritha is obsessed with the character of Charulata just like her lover. Yet,she lacks the courage to take bold steps in love unlike the character she idolises.

The film will be screened at IHC,today. Contact: 24682001 –
