(Representational Photo)Hours after the Ministry of Home Affairs notified the rules for implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, security was tightened in the national capital on Monday.
Police said a team, led by DCP (East) Apoorva Gupta, is patrolling 24×7 in parts of East Delhi. DCP (Northeast) Joy Tirkey said flag marches will be carried out in Northeast Delhi for the next few days, starting Monday. “… Social media posts are also being monitored in real-time,” he said.
Meanwhile, a small protest was held at Jamia Millia Islamia.
University registrar Nazim Husain Jafri told The Indian Express: “A small group of students had gathered on campus, and was dispersed by the Proctor later. There was no ‘protest’ as such. Security around the campus has been increased as anti-CAA protests erupted here last time too…”
“We tightened security to avoid any kind of agitation on the campus. No protests against CAA will be allowed by students or outsiders near the campus,” said Jamia’s Acting V-C Eqbal Hussain, as quoted by PTI.
DCP (Southeast) Rajesh Deo said a small protest was held in front of the Central Canteen, near gate number 7 on the campus, around 8 pm. “Students affiliated with the NSUI led the protest. A total of 10-12 students had gathered on the campus… for 15 minutes… No protests took place outside.”
A senior police officer said heavy police deployment is in place outside the varsity to prevent any further gatherings.
During the anti-CAA protests in December 2019, police had barged into campus in pursuit of alleged miscreants, who had set some buses on fire, and were accused of attacking students in the library. Several students were injured in the violence.
