The BSP is likely to contest all 70 seats in the Delhi polls set to be held in February.
Lakshman Singh, president of the party’s Delhi unit, said, “Our goal is to ensure good participation and representation from all sections of society, and we are focusing on every single seat in the Capital.”
Singh indicated that the selection process is underway. “It is too early to announce our first list of candidates, but interviews are taking place… The BSP can be expected to give a tough fight to AAP, BJP and Congress,” he said.
The party led by Mayawati has contested the Delhi elections since 1993, and in the last four polls, it has consistently fielded candidates in all 70 seats. Its performance, however, has seen a sharp decline since 2008 when it secured two seats and achieved a 14% vote share. That year, it ended up third in the overall results.
In subsequent elections, the party’s fortunes have dwindled. Its vote share dropped to 5.4% in 2013, 1.3% in 2015, and a mere 0.7% in 2020, being placed fifth in party-wise vote share after the AAP, BJP, Congress and the Janata Dal (United).
