Art Junction is back with a new look, more space and ambitious plans

When gallery Art Junction opened its doors at the erstwhile Intercontinental Hotel in 1998,it made a lot of noise—literally. The Page 3 crowd revved up exhibition openings by swaggering to juicy beats. A series of exhibitions kept interest levels soaring and the gallery always reported good sales, thanks to the high net worth individuals dropping by. When the gallery reopened on Saturday, the crowd was still there, milling around the 3,000 sq ft new space divided into three parts.

The message was clear— Art Junction is back with a new look, additional space and a comparatively sedate exhibition called ‘The Untold Story’. The third-floor gallery has been renovated over the past one-and-a-half years, during which period chairman and MD Jyotsna Suri renamed the hotel as The Lalit in memory of late husband and owner. “It’s a special occasion as we will showcase a more dynamic aspect of art,” says Suri. The three part gallery has a separate space for holding art forums and audio-visuals projections.

The focus, however, remains unchanged. “It is to help all young artists who lack a platform,” shares curator Naresh Kapuria. ‘The Untold Story’ showcases the works of 24 artists, who cover a wide array of subjects and styles. While Knock,Knock,Knock by artist Vaibhav Sharma is a massive light pink egg that tries to break open while a host of scissor-like chickens squat around, photographer Sandeep Shankar’s black and white long shot of Taj Mahal shows it swathed by the placid Yamuna with buffaloes crossing the tract.

Suri plans to run the theme ‘The Untold Story’ throughout the year with a different artist. “Next will be the story of artist Satish Gujral who would be presented with a sculpted book,” says Suri. There will be exhibitions every one-and-a-half months with younger artists and Kapuria would narrate the story of a senior artist. Other artists whose works are on display are MK Puri,Gopi Gajwani and Les Dangerfield.

The exhibition is open till May 28 at The Lalit
