Bean There?

There are coffee houses, and there are coffee houses. Franchises selling caffeinated drinks rarely understand how imperfectly brewed “expressos” can ruin your day.

There are coffee houses, and there are coffee houses. Franchises selling caffeinated drinks rarely understand how imperfectly brewed “expressos” can ruin your day. Segafredo Zanetti attempts to fill the void with its Italian Espresso Bar in Gurgaon and Saket, both of which opened earlier this year. An outlet in Vasant Vihar is on the cards.

The Gurgaon cafe in Ambience Mall welcomes us with the Segafredo signature red and black decor, replicated across 600 branches globally. We enter a modern coffee house with flat screens,a lounge area and a potential bar.

Our first order,an espresso. It’s cheaper here than in most other cafes (Rs 59),richer in smoky texture and lethal in snuffing out our pre-siesta inertia — this shot of special roast conjured broken Italian out of us. For those who don’t enjoy concentrated bliss, the cappuccino (starting Rs 74) here is frothy, smooth on the palate and strong. Segafredo’s signature cold coffees are a tad expensive, but have interesting additions of fruit pulp in Segafredo Wild (Rs 124) and creamier concoctions of Cappuccino Freddo and Mocha Freddo (Rs 104 each). The Cafe Frappé (Rs 104),however,leaves us with mixed emotions. The coffee is a stronger blend than usual but has the same flaw as in any half-hearted franchise: the second half of the frappé has no trace of espresso or milk, only shards of ice.

Sadly,Segafredo’s coffee-making skills do not extend to their food. The Cajun Chicken Foccacia (Rs 110) lacks the punch the seasoning provides, and the bread is lifeless. There is nothing Mediterranean about the Mediterranean Foccacia (Rs 90) served with a bland seasoning and sun-dried tomatoes. The portions are small and the platters looked naked in the absence of any side orders. The Chicken Nuggets are a saving grace, but priced at Rs 150 for the small portion,we wondered how we’d get full. If you’ve got an appetite, you will most likely have to hunt for more food later.

Come June,Segafredo gets its liquor license and the chance to serve cocktails,at prices starting Rs 300. The ambience allows leisurely drinking, add some flat screens and Happy Hours — and you’ll have the next big hang out.
