Barkha Singh takes Delhi Mahila Congress charge today

The move, approved by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, was announced on October 6.

Former chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Barkha Singh will take charge as President of the Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress Saturday.
She will take over from Onika Mehrotra, with Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ajay Maken officiating the move.

Singh said Friday having earlier served the party in different capacities, she would “now endeavour to strengthen the Mahila Congress and bring the organisation to the fore”.

The move, approved by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, was announced on October 6.

“This should be seen as part of the larger structural changes taking place in the party. Barkhaji brings with her, her vast experience in dealing with women’s issues and will add value to the women’s wing of the Congress as well,” said DPCC spokesperson Sharmistha Mukherjee.

Singh represented the R K Puram constituency in the assembly over two terms in 2003 and 2008. She served as DCW chief for three years between 2012 and 2015.

In the months preceding the end of her tenure, she dealt with two high-profile cases involving Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Kumar Vishwas and MLA Somnath Bharti.
