A group of Bajrang Dal members chased an SUV allegedly smuggling cattle on Gurgaon’s Western Peripheral or KMP Expressway early Monday. According to the police, the black Scorpio with a police logo on its rear part was chased by three Bajrang Dal members for 1.5 km on the expressway at around 4.30 am.

The police said the vehicle was going from Sampla near Rohtak to Rajasthan. The car hit a divider on the road and the men fled from the spot leaving the vehicle, which had three cows and a calf, they added. They said the men allegedly opened multiple rounds of fire while escaping. No one was injured in the shooting, they added.

“We were informed by the Bajrang Dal team and reached the spot around 5.30 am and found the live cattle inside the car. We are probing the case and an FIR will be registered soon,” said Rupesh Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Farrukhnagar police station.

The police said the Scorpio had a black cloth draped from inside to avoid being seen. “They also had a fake Delhi registration plate,” said an officer.

The police said they have also seized two empty cartridges from the vehicle. The car was seized by the police, and the cattle were taken to a cow shelter in Farrukhnagar.

Earlier, in a video, a member of the Bajrang Dal had claimed they were part of the team of Mohit Yadav alias Monu Manesar. Monu Manesar, a Bajrang Dal member and face of the cow protection task force of the Haryana government in Gurgaon, has been named in a chargesheet by the Rajasthan Police in connection with the death of two Muslim men in Bhiwani in February, and is absconding.

However, the police denied the claim. “Monu Manesar has nothing to do with this case. We don’t know if it is his team,” said a police officer.
