Back to same old phase?

Tejinder Pal Singh,Jai Prakash Yadav and Shreyas Khanolkar — the ‘rebels’ back into the Railways fold — have about 12,500 first-class runs and 326 wickets among them. Core members of the team before joining the Indian Cricket League, they are ready to give the team a boost. However, their comeback could hinder the process of phasing out the ageing legs that was gaining momentum with the retirements of veterans Harvinder Singh and Raja Ali and debuts of Mahesh Rawat,Karan Sharma and Anureet Singh over the last two seasons.

“I’m not sure what are they going to do,but if they want to play again they’ll have to go through the same process that everyone does: the trials and the inter-Railways. The future definitely rests with the juniors, though I’m not aware of any phasing out programme for the seniors,” Railways coach Abhay Sharma told Sportline.

A senior official reinforces Sharma’s point showing Railways’s double domestic titles in the last ten years. “We have won two Ranji Trophies in the last ten years, with almost the same team. So,there’s no question of considering age. A 35-year-old player can be fitter and better than a 19-year old,” he said.

Meanwhile the youngsters aren’t feeling any sense of insecurity. If at all, they sound all the more confident after consistent performances in the IPL. Karan Sharma, who was promoted to the Ranji side in 2007 after spending three years with the U-19 and U-22 teams, believes the inclusion of the three players will raise the competition levels.

“I think the youngsters have done well enough to put their stakes, but they have to go through the same grind the seniors have to,in order to be considered for the next season. But that’s in no way a threat as their presence is only going to give the selectors some more options and we can learn a lot from their experience,” said Sharma.

Mahesh Rawat says he wouldn’t be surprised if all three make it to the squad. Their inclusion,he feels, could be a learning curve for the youngsters even if they have to give up their places.

“It’s an open field which will become more competitive. Their records speak for themselves and all of them left at their peak. They are 30-plus but experience always keeps you in good stead. Youngsters had a decent season and the seniors’ comeback will keep them on their toes. They can always learn from them, even while making way,” Rawat said.
