Assaulted DU student dies

A youth,who was pursuing a correspondence course from Delhi University,died at the Sushruta Trauma Centre on Saturday night,over a week after he was attacked by a gang in Mukherjee Nagar on December 10.

A youth,who was pursuing a correspondence course from Delhi University,died at the Sushruta Trauma Centre on Saturday night,over a week after he was attacked by a gang in Mukherjee Nagar on December 10. The first-year student used to attend classes in Ramjas College.

According to the police,Manoj (18),a resident of Rampura,was assaulted with hockey sticks while he was having tea with two friends in the Hudson Lane area. A car stopped in front of them and seven youths alighted. They first argued with Manoj over some issue,and then began beating him up with hockey sticks. After that,the assailants escaped, a senior police officer said. The cause of their enmity is yet to be ascertained,he added.

Manoj was admitted to the Sushruta Trauma Centre that day with a head injury,the police said,adding that he succumbed to his injuries around 10.15 pm on Saturday.

Immediately after his death,some of the deceaseds friends started protesting at the trauma centre,demanding that action be taken against the culprits. The police said the assault case,which was registered on December 10,has now been converted into a murder case. One of the accused persons has been identified as Sanjay,they added.
