Rs 2.5 lakh,valuables stolen from car
Rs 2.5 lakh in cash,credit cards and two mobile phones were stolen from a sweet shop owner in Tilak Nagar area of West Delhi on Friday evening. According to the police,the incident occurred around 7.45 pm when Vikaspuri resident Ashok Aggarwal owner of a sweet shop had gone shopping in a local market with his wife. He had parked his Indigo car outside a garment showroom and when he came back,he found the car window broken and his bag with cash,credit cards and phones missing. A theft case was registered at Tilak Nagar police station, an officer said.
St Stephens: Bishops legal counsel out
The controversies surrounding St Stephens College claimed another scapegoat as Sunil Mathews,legal counsel to the Bishop and Governing Body,was removed from his position on Friday. The move was reportedly made under pressure from Enos Das Pradhan,the Church of North India (CNI) representative in the Governing Body,who wrote to the CNI Moderator Purely Lyngdoh,alleging that Mathews was misleading Bishop Sunil Kumar Singh. Pradhan,however,denied any involvement in the incident. Sources said Mathews was made a scapegoat in the power game. Mathews was not available for comment.
Tourism fair in Gurgaon
Union Tourism Minister Kumari Selja inaugurated a two-day tourism fair at Ambience Mall in Gurgaon on Saturday. Organised by Haryana Tourism,the fair is a one-stop exhibition to promote Gurgaon as a new tourism hub. The exhibition is also a dress rehearsal for the forthcoming 2010 Commonwealth Games,an official said.
Student commits suicide,say cops
A 24-year-old student allegedly committed suicide in East Delhi on Saturday,the police said. Abhay,a B Com student,allegedly jumped from the top of a three-storeyed building in Mandavli,where he lived. His father,Ajay Nivani,is a property dealer.
Mercury dips to 7.7 degrees Celsius
Cold winds blew through the city on Saturday morning as the mercury dipped to 7.7 degrees Celsius,the seasons lowest,so far. The temperature has been oscillating between 8 and 25 degrees Celsius last week.
66 child labourers rescued
Sixty-six bonded child labourers,trafficked from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh,were rescued by the authorities today from plastic,leather and other units in the national capital on Saturday. Ten of their employers have been arrested. The operation was launched jointly by the task force on the elimination of child labour,the area Sub Divisional Magistrate,officials of the Labour Department,the Delhi Police and child rights NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA). The children rescued today belong to the age group of six to 15 and are mostly from Madhubani,Darbhanga,Sitamarhi areas of Bihar and Gondabasti in UP.
