Six members of a family sustained serious burn injuries after a fire triggered by gas leakage broke out in their East Delhi home. The police said the blaze was reported from the Shastri Nagar residence of one Arvind Verma (45) around 6.15 am. Verma,his wife Shobha (40) and their four children were injured in the fire that broke out following leakage of gas from an LPG cylinder. Verma and Shobha suffered 90 per cent and 80 per cent burns respectively while their daughter Kanchan,who is also in a critical condition,suffered 60 per cent burns,the police said.

IGNOU holds 21st convocation
NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) held its 21st convocation on Monday and awarded nearly 1,33,628 diplomas and graduation degrees. S K Joshi,former director general of the Centre for Science and Industrial Research,was the chief guest. In his report,Vice-Chancellor V N Rajasekharan Pillai announced new programmes.

Five-day parole to former cop
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday granted five-day parole to former senior police officer S S Rathi who is serving life imprisonment for killing two Haryana-based businessmen in a fake encounter near Connaught Place in 1997. The court allowed Rathi to attend compulsory classes in LL M from March 18 to 23 upon furnishing a personal and surety bond of Rs 30,000 each. The High Court had,in September last year,upheld the life sentence of 10 policemen,including the then Assistant Commissioner of Police Rathi,for the murders.

Proclaimed offender arrested
New Delhi: A 31-year-old proclaimed offender,allegedly involved in more than 15 cases of extortion,robbery and murder,was arrested on Sunday,police said. Sandeep Parmar alias Dabbu,an interstate criminal of Ashok Rathi Gang,was apprehended from Dwarka when he came there to meet a property dealer,Additional Commissioner (Crime) Neeraj Thakur said. A sophisticated pistol,four 9mm cartridges and a stolen car have been allegedly recovered from him.
