Are you ready for new credit system, HRD ministry asks DU

The ministry had earlier directed all central varsities to implement the system from coming academic session.

Raising questions about the preparedness of Delhi University to introduce the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), the Human Resource Development Ministry has written to DU vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh seeking clarification on the issue.

The ministry had earlier directed all central varsities to implement the system from the coming academic session. The proposed system will enable students to opt for courses of their choice and facilitate seamless mobility of students across universities in the country.

In a letter sent late last week, the ministry has sought clarification from Singh about the arrangements made to implement the system after DU’s academic council cleared it for the coming session amid dissent.

According to officials in the HRD ministry, the communication to the university is to ensure students are not “misguided” about their future and about the extent of preparations made.

Officials said the ministry does not want a repeat of the confusion and controversy that followed the introduction of the four-year undergraduate programme, which was later scrapped last year.

Sources in the university, however, say they are working in tandem with instructions issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC). In a communication to the vice-chancellors of all central universities on January 8, UGC had laid down a set of guidelines and had asked the universities to follow these to implement the scheme.
