3.7 lakh & counting: AAP grows as more join party via phone, internet

The party also waived the Rs 10 membership fee in order to enhance its national footprint in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Two days after the ‘Main Bhi Aam Aadmi’ membership drive was launched by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, close to 3.70 lakh people have joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) either online or through mobile services.

On January 10, Kejriwal had declared that the party aims to hit one crore members by January 26, when the drive will come to a close. The party also waived the Rs 10 membership fee in order to enhance its national footprint in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

An AAP spokesperson said till Sunday evening, more than 3 lakh members had applied for membership. “There have been 3.7 lakh people who have taken membership either online, or through messages or a missed call to the number that Arvindji announced on January 10. We have not disseminated the information entirely, as to where in the country these members have joined. That process is ongoing,” the spokesperson said.

AAP leaders said the 3.7 lakh figure did not count those who have become members through door-to-door drives or at party offices throughout the country.

“There are many more, more than a lakh people who have registered by filling forms at various centres across the country. These forms have to be uploaded and then they will be taken into account. This has not been done so far. Every party office in the country has its volunteers who have downloaded the membership forms en masse, and are going to people’s homes to ask them to join,” a party official said.

Members also said the numbers would pick up after January 17, when people will be able to register using their voter ID cards.

“This was envisaged for people who do not have mobile phones, and is an important cog in our membership drive. There are many in the country who want to be part of the movement but can’t because they don’t have a mobile phone, through which confirmations of membership are given. Once that system (using voter ID cards) is up and running after January 17, the numbers will swell manifold,” an AAP member said.
