Two labourers sleeping on the footpath were injured when a 25-year-old businessman,allegedly under the influence of alcohol,lost control of his Mercedes Benz and rammed into them in Safdarjung Enclave,South Delhi.
The injured were taken to AIIMS are stated to be stable. The police said the mishap took place around 2 am,when the accused,Simran Singh Sodhi,was returning home with two others in his from Hotel Ashokas F-Bar.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal,said Sodhi was under the influence of alcohol. According to a senior officer,he took a U-turn but,unable to control the car reportedly under the influence of alcohol,hit the pavement and the victims sleeping there identified as Rajesh (alias Raja) and Babu,both in their fifties.
The injured labourers were taken to AIIMS where doctors said their condition was stable. The officer said Sodhi has recently returned from the US after completing his education. He stays at R-12,Hauz Khas; the family runs a business of manufacturing plastic refrigerator items,with the factory located in Okhla,Southeast Delhi.
A case (FIR number 67/09) has been registered at the newly opened Safdarjung Enclave police station and Sodhi has been charged under Sections 279 (rash and negligent driving),337 (causing hurt) and 185 (Motor Vehicles Act). He was arrested after the accident and was reportedly granted bail on Saturday.
DCP Dhaliwal said the police have recorded statements and investigations are on.
