As many as 206 candidates have filed nomination papers for Lok Sabha polls in Delhi, as the process of filing nominations closed on Saturday. According to initial estimates by the Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer, 307 nominations have been received from 206 candidates.
Bhojpuri actor-singer Manoj Tiwari from BJP, actor Biswajit Chatterjee from TMC, and sitting Congress MPs Krishna Tirath and Ramesh Kumar were among a host of leaders who filed their candidature on Saturday.
The scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 24 and candidates can withdraw their nominations till March 26.
“During the Lok Sabha election in 2009, 221 candidates filed nominations and 160 of them had contested the election,” an EC official said.
According to the initial round-up, the maximum number of nominations — 40 — were filed from Northeast Delhi constituency.
“We have good intentions and I am sure people will trust us and vote for us,” Ramesh Bidhuri, the BJP candidate from South Delhi, said.
“I have been working on the field for the poor for many years. People know that I am one of them and I know they will vote for me,” Ramesh Kumar, the Congress candidate from South Delhi, said.
Prominent leaders Kapil Sibal from Congress, Harsh Vardhan from BJP and AAP’s Ashutosh will be contesting from Chandni Chowk.
A tough fight is expected in New Delhi constituency from where Ajay Maken (Congress), Meenakshi Lekhi (BJP) and Ashish Khetan (AAP) are contesting.
