(File Photo) The Delhi High Court Monday asked CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat to file copies of FIRs in which she has sought transfer of probe into alleged excessive use of force by police personnel during the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots to an independent body.
A division bench of Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Anish Dayal asked the petitioner (Karat) to place on record electronic copies of the FIRs for which transfer of investigation to an independent body had been sought and listed it for hearing on August 7.
The HC said that once the FIRs are on record, a direction may be passed to the Delhi Police to file a status report in relation to the investigation in the matters.

The HC was hearing a batch of pleas pertaining to the Northeast Delhi riots. While Karat’s plea seeks transfer of investigation to an independent body, certain other pleas seek registration of FIR against political leaders for alleged hate speeches.
In July last year, the HC had allowed the impleadment of several politicians, including four BJP leaders — Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur, Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma and Abhay Verma — as well as Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, social activist Harsh Mander, actor Swara Bhasker, activist Umar Khalid among others as respondents to the batch of pleas.
