The Railways Saturday issued a notice to two mosques, located in Central Delhi, asking them to “remove encroachments” on railway land in 15 days.

The notice said if the encroachments were not removed within the stipulated time, the Railways would take action to remove the structures themselves.

A Northern Railways (NR) spokesperson said the structures are on railway land along the main route between New Delhi and Ghaziabad. The spokesperson explained that it was a routine procedure to address potential safety hazards “posed by these structures”.

The notice issued to the mosques read: “Railway property has been illegally invaded upon. You must voluntarily dismantle any unlicensed structures, including temples, mosques or shrines within 15 days of receiving this alert or the railway administration will take legal action.”

“Encroachments that are not permitted will be removed in compliance with the Railways Act. Any damage incurred throughout the procedure will be your responsibility…,” it added.

Asked if the Northern Railways has a definite plan along predetermined routes to identify encroaching properties, the spokesperson said, “Whenever it is put to our notice, structures are removed in a methodical manner.”
