Karnataka Lokayukta Y Bhaskar Rao has directed the police to submit reports every six months on the measures taken to mitigate parking problems in Bangalore.
Rao said this at a meeting with officials of the police,Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and the directorate for Urban Land Transport on Friday. The meeting was called to discuss people friendly parking systems in Bangalore.
Rao also directed the officials to ensure a safe parking system that does not affect free-flow of vehicles and hassle free parking at designated places. They must also prevent unauthorised people from collecting parking fees,Rao told them. He also directed the BBMP to remove illegal speed breakers to prevent accidents.
The other directions issued by the Lokayukta include:
* BBMP must plan to build multi-level parking lots over the next 2-3 years. It must also inform the public about available parking places in every area.
* Those collecting parking fees must wear photo IDs,or be penalised. The police must book illegal parking fee collectors .
* The details of parking lots and parking fees must be sent to the police commissioner and additional commissioner,traffic,to ensure action is taken to safeguard citizens.
* The police must informed the BBMP if a private person is illegally collecting parking fees. The BBMP commissioner must inform the Lokayukta on the progress made in implementation of the new parking policy.
* Research should be undertaken to find ways required for free flow of vehicles should be undertaken. Police and BBMP officials should check parking areas to avoid illegal activities.
