Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Wednesday said that he has no regrets about the party’s former ally AIADMK’s general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami not making his presence in Tiruchirapalli to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will be arriving at 10.30 am on Tuesday, January 2.
“Those who wholeheartedly want Modi to become the Prime Minister are with us. You will see several party leaders today. That’s enough for us. We won’t be disappointed if some don’t attend, nor will we call and request anyone to come. This is our ideology,” he told reporters during a Swachh Bharat campaign held ahead of PM Modi’s visit to the district.
PM Modi will participate in the 38th convocation ceremony of Bharathidasan University and launch multiple development projects worth over Rs 19,850 crore related to aviation, rail, road, oil and gas, shipping and higher education sectors.
Alongside PM Modi, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, Chief Minister M K Stalin are set to participate in the programmes.
After the events, PM Modi will fly to Lakshadweep to attend a public function.
Ahead of the high-profile event, the whole of Tiruchirapalli district has been brought under a thick security blanket that includes traffic diversions.
Regarding the absence of AIADMK’s Palaniswami in the lists of guests for the event, Annamalai stated that the BJP only wants people who genuinely support PM Modi, rather than those wishing to merely use the opportunity to stand next to him.
On the speculation that former chief minister and expelled AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam might be meeting PM Modi, Annamalai hinted he might get that opportunity, just like other leaders, as he was a former chief minister of the state.
Annamalai said whoever accepts PM Modi and wants him to be the Prime Minister are BJP’s friends. “If they want to join us, the minimum condition is they should love Modi and the country and work hard to make Modi the Prime Minister of India for the third time,” the BJP president clarified.
It is to be noted that a few months ago AIADMK had snapped ties with BJP and walked out of the NDA alliance. The decision to break away from the BJP-led NDA was taken at a meeting chaired by party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai.
In a resolution, the AIADMK said that for the past one year, the state BJP leadership had been defaming the party, its ideology and leaders such as M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.
The resolution added that the party had taken into account the sentiments of the party’s two crore followers. Soon after it was passed, hundreds of AIADMK cadres raised slogans, burst crackers and distributed sweets outside the party headquarters.
