Winners pledge to put students first, always

The winners of the elections today pledged to work together for the students of the university, their different party backgrounds notwithstanding.

The winners of the elections today pledged to work together for the students of the university, their different party backgrounds notwithstanding. Though the PUSU-INSO alliance has defeated SOPU-ABVP,the Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC) has representatives from three parties this year — the seats of president and joint secretary have gone to PUSU,vice-president to INSO and general secretary to ABVP.

The Council had been swept by SOPU-INSO the last time.

Gurindervir Singh Aulakh,president
An election debutant,Aulakh has a computer science degree and is pursuing a Masters at UIET. Aulakh won by the largest margin among winning candidates, defeating SOPU-ABVP candidate Mohit Taneja (Monty) by 171 votes.

“We had expected more votes especially from UIET,but the party is happy. The strategy of senior members and our track-record has brought us success,” Aulakh said.

He said that the central placement cell, more hostels,an improved library system, improvement of the placement scenario for self-financing courses and preventing a fee hike will be among his priorities.

Vibha,vice-president
The only woman in the council comes from a small village in Kangra,Himachal Pradesh, and wants to work for the girls who come to PU from other states.

Vibha, who won her debut election by 52 votes against SOPU-ABVP’s Bhavika Sharma, attributed her success to the work done by the party. Addressing the shortage of hostel rooms for girls will be her major concern in her post, she said.

“Every year,a new course is added and students are admitted but the university continues to sleep over the issue of accommodation for girls coming from outside Chandigarh,” said the M.Sc Botany Second Year student.

Akhil Bansal,general secretary
Ecstatic at his victory,Bansal,a student of the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Studies, said,“We have been tirelessly campaigning to inform voters of our achievements throughout the year.” Bansal, who won by a narrow 29-vote margin, conceded that “without the ABVP’s alliance with SOPU,I could not have won”. On top of his agenda is to “dramatically improve the range and quality of job placements”.

Subhash Chander,joint secretary
The BDS student said he was “speechless” over his 154-vote victory. “My only priority is to fight for the rights of the students and act in their best interests.”

Chander attributed his victory to his “past efforts” at securing “better facilities and resources in the library”,and to his “campaign for an increase in hostel placements”. As joint secretary,he would like to “further improve the quality of education students receive here,” he said.
