Walking the edge

In Singh’s world,dreams are serene,dark and cool—like a forest pond—and so are his clothes.

There’s some fabulous fashion and some faux pas as designers deliver riskier styles at the Lakme Fashion Week

Harangad Singh
In Singh’s world, dreams are serene, dark and cool—like a forest pond—and so are his clothes. Perfectly executed with fluid lines and a touch of dreaminess, his collection of cocktail wear will appeal to women who would hint at,rather than flaunt, their femininity. Uniformly understated and with the most discreet embellishments, the dresses may have tended to get a tad too plain, but nothing that the right accessorising can’t correct.

Amalraj Sengupta
It was a somber mood on the runway on Saturday as Sengupta paraded his latest collection. It was the designer’s vision of a military-ruled world that strutted down the runway—sleeveless and elongated bomber jackets modified as tunics, tie and dye scenes of bombed ruins, epaulets and discreet military stars, intricately woven belts and suspenders embedded in shirts formed this immaculately tailored collection. Yet,what world can be depressing,if there are still such beautifully cut pants and lovingly pleated folds?

Shrivan Narresh
In their second showing at the LFW,the swimsuit designers from Delhi called to mind the lounging beauties of the Riviera. Colour-blocked tankinis, maillots, maxis and tube dresses were chic without compromising on oomph. Teamed with perfectly knotted bandanas on the head, chunky statement jewellery and neutral totes, the outfits were the very image of relaxed elegance.

Little Shilpa
Shilpa Chavan has,in the past, always delivered fashion that is unapologetically cerebral and non-commercial. Unfortunately, she seems to be caught up in her image as a churner of cutting edge fashion and has delivered a line that confuses, more than it appeals. The cobwebby tulle and lace fanciers and hats brought to mind a strange mix of Lovecraftian horror and Miss Havisham-like eccentricity. And we’re not sure that’s a look we want.

Viaa by Vivek Karunakaran
The sound of hip-hop,poetry on urban unrest and the smell of factory sludge seemed to fill the air as Karunakaran showcased his collection of grunge fashion. This was a decidedly aggressive collection with its hoodies, slouchy boots, asymmetry and chains as embellishments. We’re glad that it didn’t have the glitter of city lights, but maybe the grimness could’ve been toned down a little.
