The CBI special court of Darshan Singh convicted an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Chandigarh Police in a graft case on Thursday.
The case dates back to August 21,2007,when ASI Surinder Pal was caught taking a bribe of Rs 2,500 in his office at the Sector-39 police station,and was arrested by the CBI.
According to the CBI,complainant Rajesh Kumar of Ambala had alleged that the accused had demanded Rs 2,500 from him and his brother-in-law Rajinder Kumar of Dadumajra Colony,threatening to implicate Rajinder in a case if they failed to meet the demand.
He said there was a complaint registered against Rajinder at the Sector-39 police station accusing him of taking money on the pretext of arranging jobs. The ASI asked Rajinder to pay him or be framed in the case.
After the CBI laid a trap,Pal was arrested with five notes of Rs 500 denomination.
The charges in the case were framed on December 6,2007,and the prosecution evidence was closed on September 16,2008.
The quantum of sentence will be announced in the CBI court on Friday.
