The University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) will be among the first Panjab University departments to introduce the Choice-Based Grading System (CGPA) from the next session.
The committee constituted to formulate the modalities of the system is working on its implementation.
During a meeting with the university authorities and student representatives on Thursday,it was decided that the system will be implemented from the next session.
UIET students said the grading system will help them score a higher percentage, which will ultimately help them in campus placement.
Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti confirmed the report.
A few other demands were raised in the meeting, including reduction in detention fee, which is Rs 5,000 for each subject at present,an improvement chance after results are declared and not conducting reappearing exams along with the regular exams.
If the system comes into effect,it will be fruitful for students as they can study those subjects, which are not a part of their prescribed syllabus. This will allow students to get credit for subjects that their regular degree course does not offer.
PU also intends to provide the credit system in its affiliated colleges that offer masters courses.
The system will allow for transfer of credits,if a student leaves an institution and joins another.
