Bags 7-day respite; police videograph entire two-and-a-half-hour drama
High drama prevailed at an SCO in Sector 22 this morning when an UT Estate Office team, along with 50 policemen, went to carry out demolition orders passed by the EO owing to violations in the premises where a coaching institute was being run. As soon as the team reached, one of the owners of the premises locked the students inside, thereby disrupting the drive and at the same causing inconvenience to the students who underwent the ordeal for over two hours.
The drama continued for over two hours, amidst the presence of the ADC-cum-SDM (Central) Mahavir Kaushik, tehsildar, and SDO (Buildings) who were carrying out the drive before the team finally left empty handed. In fact, sensing the situation, the cops were armed with water cannons to bring the situations under control if required. According to officials of the UT Estate Office,it all started at 10 am when the team of the Estate Office led by SDO Suresh Kumar reached the premises of Dr Kheras Institute at SCO 2409,10,after a notice of violations of building by-laws was served since 2009 and demolitions orders were passed.
However, the in-charge of the institute refused to cooperate with the team on the pretext that he did not get demolition orders and that he had already submitted a revised building plan for the premises to get the changes that he had made inside the premises, regulated. At the time, the premise was locked with over 60 students inside and the teachers were stranded outside. The police personnel, who were in equal number, videographed the entire episode that continued till 12:30 pm.
Finally, the EO officials relented and granted a period of one week to the institute to either remove the violations or get his building plans sanctioned otherwise the demolition drive will be carried out.
The EO officials said that the institute was served a notice under Section 15 of the Capital Development Act for making illegal partitions inside the premise which do not comply with the building by-laws.
