The new president of the Golf Club,Birinder Gill is all set to swing into action
It’s perhaps one of the most coveted offices in the city. While its got much to do with the view from the expansive windows overlooking the greens, its also the fact that its the office of president of the Chandigarh Golf Club that credits itself for having one of the busiest courses in the country. Stepping into new shoes and taking seat as the new president this Monday morning was a bright and cheerful Birinder Singh Gill. Gilly,as hes fondly known both on and off the greens,is a familiar name when it comes to Golf Club elections and as he says so himself,I have risen through the ranks. Having earlier served as captain of the course, honorary secretary and twice as vice president, its no surprise to see Gilly – a lawyer by profession – at the top today. And Day One saw him swinging in action already.
We would like to take off from where the previous team left and roll out new initiatives of our own, shares Gill who had a straight win this time around. Its a job that requires passion, selfless service, discipline and respect for public money and rules of the institution, briefs the new president who wants to do a la Obama Yes We Can when it comes to getting the Golf Club back on track. Having been a part of club and its committees for many years,I have realised that we have deviated from our primary objective – golf, tells a slightly peeved Gill. On his part, hes set to invest in the future (read young talent) and get the greens lush once again. When it comes to latter, heres what hes digging up. We want to make the course both aesthetic as well as challenging. The long term goal of uniform putting surfaces is on top of the agenda and we would be addressing fairway issues as well, lists out the avid golfer. Interestingly, also on top of Gilly and his teams mind is promoting young talent and offering them more facilities. We need to invest in our youngsters for they are the future and Chandigarh has always been a nursery for young golfers, you hear Gill say as he shares plans to conduct training sessions and more focussed programmes for junior golfers. You know Chandigarh is perhaps one of a kind club that encourages tiny-tots and that has people coming in from far off places, the president informs.
Also when it comes to playing better golf,Gilly and his team promise to bring in better facilities at the range as well. It should offer more than just swinging a bucket of balls endlessly, quips Gill who will aim to bring in monitors for instant playback along with some more state of the art equipment. And yes,Mashie and Niblick will get a new look, says Birinder who has been the editor of the Clubs magazine also. A jack of all trades when it comes to the Club, wont you say!
