Yellow Chilli rolls out a food festival to mark Baisakhi celebrations

If you have travelled extensively through Punjab, then you would know that almost every street corner offers a culinary surprise. Amritsar has its lip-smacking fish,Ambala is incomplete without Puran Singh’s chicken curry,Patiala is famous for its line-up of paranthas. Packing in all these popular favourites is the Mela Baisakhi Da,a food festival that’s been organised at Sanjeev Kapoor’s The Yellow Chilli in Panchkula to celebrate the season of harvest. “Baisakhi is around the corner,so we decided to put together a mix of specials,” explains restaurateur Neha Mahajan, who took it upon herself to compile a list of popular Punjabi favourites for her team of chefs to dish out.

From Aloo Wadiyaan (Rs 130),a mealtime staple from Amritsar to the popular Pede wali Lassi (Rs 60) and Rajma (Rs 160) — a plethora of Punjabi staples are included in the menu. “These are dishes that traditional Punjabi homes were known to specialise in. In fact, most menus at fine dining restaurants won’t have them, which is why we thought it would be refreshing to include these,” shares Mahajan.

Among the starters,Tandoori Aloo Pyaaz (Rs 160),Tandoori Achari Khumb (Rs 190),Murg Ke Pakode (Rs 220),Qasoori Kali Mirch Murg Tikka (Rs 230) and Amritsari Macchi (Rs 240) are worth a try. If you are, however, looking for more ethnic flavours,Aloo Wadiyaan is highly recommended,as is the Paneer Palak Bhurjee (Rs 180). “When it comes to chicken curry, the version by Ambala’s Puran Singh is the most famous,” pitches in the restaurant’s general manager Navin Nischal. The dish here is priced at Rs 250. In the same league is Mutton Tawa (Rs 250). Team these up with a range of paranthas that are on offer. One can choose from Mooli Parantha,Aloo or Gobhi, all for Rs 30. Though Kheer is an all-time favourite dessert,at the food festival it comes in an unusual Lychee flavour (Rs 50).
