Shahab Durazi is very surprised by the fuss being made about his return to the ramp. The designer, who last showed in 2005,will be the grand finale designer at the upcoming HDIL India Couture Week in Mumbai, and naturally, most fashion watchers are excited about Durazi’s show. The man himself though, confesses,“Frankly,it’s a little overwhelming and intimidating.” The designer reveals that he’s still busy putting finishing touches to some outfits.

Durazi explains that there’s a very good reason for staying off the runway. “I make couture and it doesn’t make sense to show at the other fashion weeks, because they’re for pret collections.” He was to show at the Couture Week last time, but “couldn’t for various reasons”. Which is why,he’s all the more excited about finally showing this year. “The collection won’t be the kind that shouts from rooftops. The clothes will have simple silhouettes, all the work is in the details,” he says. In other words, the women’s wear will showcase Durazi’s signature style of elegant and non-fussy evening wear, with minimal, but painstakingly-rendered opulence,on October 10.

It is perhaps,a tribute to his skills as a designer, that despite minimal publicity on his part — he’s rarely ever spotted on red carpets and party circuits — Durazi continues to have a regular flow of loyal clients at his boutique in Cuffe Parade,Mumbai. Time and again, his designs are spotted on celebrities and magazine covers; Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan has a particular penchant for his gowns.
