Student research convention held at PU

In an endeavour to attract young minds towards scientific research,Panjab University,in association with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU),organised the third Student Research Convention (SRC) at the ICSSR Complex today.

In an endeavour to attract young minds towards scientific research,Panjab University,in association with the Association of Indian Universities (AIU),organised the third Student Research Convention (SRC) at the ICSSR Complex today.

“You can become a researcher only if your neurons are charged,” was the opening remark of Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti,while inaugurating the convention.

Urging the students to become scientists rather than mere PhD holders,the Vice-Chancellor extended the varsity’s full support to budding researchers. He announced that Rs 5 lakh would be set aside from the PURSE award to promote scientific temperament at school and college level.

Moreover,all facilities of the varsity would be available to these research scholars in evenings and summer holidays. Prof S C Vaidya,DUI,Prof S S Bari,Registrar,PU,Prof A S Ahluwalia,Dean,Faculty of Science,and Prof B S Bhoop,Dean Alumni,PU,also graced the occasion.

Dr Praveen Rishi,coordinator of the SRC-2010,briefed the audience about the convention and welcomed them. Over 40 research proposals were received from students and scholars enrolled in the university departments and affiliated colleges in three areas of Basic Sciences (Physics,Chemistry,Mathematics,Botany,Zoology and related disciplines),Allied Sciences (Biochemistry,Biophysics,Biotechnology,Environmental Science,Energy Science,Bioinformatics,Computer Science,Genetics,Microbiology,Pharmaceutical Sciences,Electronics,Nano-Science and related disciplines) and Engineering,Information Technology and related disciplines. Posters and verbal presentations of 21 shortlisted applicants were judged by a panel of experts.

The winners were: Basic Sciences,Gaganpreet Kaur,Prerna Aggarwal,Sajeela Awasthi. Allied Sciences,Ankur Gautam,Lalita Tanwar and Engineering and Information Technology,Dheeraj Ahuja and Mandeep Singh.

The proposals of these students will be forwarded for the North Zone SRC to be held at University of Jammu from June 4 to 6. Subsequently,the best proposals from various zones would be presented at the national level SRC to be held at Panjab University from August 11 to 13. The selected proposals will be aptly rewarded and promoted for research by AIU,said Rishi.
