While DND (do not disturb) mobile subscribers will not be getting the traffic SMS alerts,Chandigarh Police on Saturday claimed that all other technical snags have been cleared for smooth SMS alert service in the city.
There was a problem of non-connectivity for most Vodafone subscribers in the city but that problem has been sorted out. The Vodafone subscribers can now avail of the traffic SMS alert facility, DSP (Traffic) Vijay Kumar said at a press conference at the police headquarters.
Kumar, who was accompanied by SMS GupShup Vice-President (Marketing) Ravi Sundararajan, said that 1,537 subscribers were getting SMS alerts after the service was launched on September 7 in Chandigarh. SMS GupShup has designed the SMS alert service for Chandigarh Traffic Police.
There were some problems but all those issues have been solved and we hope that motorists in the city will now get regular updates about traffic situation on their mobiles, added DSP Kumar.
The basic motive behind the SMS alert service is to alert Chandigarh citizens in advance about traffic jams, congestion, roadblocks and diversions so that they can save their precious time. And the SMS service proved its vitality on September 15 when heavy rains lashed the city and citizens got timely traffic updates to avoid certain areas, Kumar pointed out.
Sundararajan said that they have also placed a technical resource to help Chandigarh Police for the initial three months. The technical resource will be stationed here to help the Chandigarh police. We also plan to increase the number of daily messages to our subscribers, he said.
He however, maintained that DND users will not be able to avail of the SMS alert services. As per TRAI regulations,DND users all over India are legally not allowed to receive alerts from the service and those getting out of DND will be able to receive the message only after 48 days, informed Sundararajan.
