Seeded players fall as underdogs prevail

dway through the tie-breaker,Yuvraj Singh Kooka wiped his face and took a sip from the bottle but exhaustion was writ large across his face

Midway through the tie-breaker,Yuvraj Singh Kooka wiped his face and took a sip from the bottle but exhaustion was writ large across his face. The second seed was being stretched and tested by Naresh Badgujar,a CHART trainee,as he gave everything to secure a place in the quarter-finals. However,Naresh didn’t budge and playing an inspired game, took the tie-breaker 9-7 to upset Yuvraj in the boys’ under-12 category of the CLTA AITA Talent Series tennis tournament being played at CLTA Stadium in Sector 10 on Tuesday.

Earlier, the pressure was all on Naresh as he tried to comeback into the match after losing the first set 0-4 to Yuvraj. But gradually Naresh found his rhythm and started hitting the ball well to put Yuvraj on the backfoot. He then won the second set to gain the advantage.

Meanwhile,Bhupender Dahiya, another CHART trainee, reached the quarter-finals by beating Daksh Marwaha 4-1,5-3 in an exciting encounter. In the girls’ under-16 category,Ravita Rawat played well to upset third seed Jahnvi Shivran 9-4 to move into the quarter-finals. She was joined by Jannat Khurana who ousted top seed Aarushi Kakkar 9-7 in the second round match. Aarushi looked off colour and could not garner points to stave off the brave challenge from Jannat. Similarly, seeded players continued to fall as Princy Panchal,a qualifier, defeated fourth seed Satakshi Singh 2-4,4-0,7-5 in a well-contested match in girls’ under-12 category.

On the other hand, top seed Vikrant Dahiya moved into the quarter-finals with an easy 9-2 win over Kabir Manrai.
