Throng university exam branch for duplicate ones; examinations scheduled to start today
A heavy rush was witnessed at the examination branch of Panjab University (PU). A huge number of students who did not receive their roll numbers ahead of the examinations starting from Saturday thronged the examination branch of the university to get their duplicate roll numbers.
Majority of students were appearing for their BA I year examinations. As per the university records,as many as 60,000 students would be appearing for BA I year examination with different subject options. The major problem is for the first year students who fail to either submit their certificates or mark sheets or fill incorrect information in their examination forms, said the Controller of Examination Prof A K Bhandari.
Students from far off places were seen having a tough time to get their duplicate roll numbers. My first exam is tomorrow and I did not receive my roll number. When enquired from the authorities, they revealed that my roll number was already dispatched. There are many other students who have enrolled into correspondence courses and have come from far off places in Punjab, said Jaswinder Kaur,a resident of Moga.
The problem of students did not receiving their roll numbers also aggravated this year as the Postal Department stopped their service of delivery through Under Postal Certificate (UPC). As the university was dispatching the roll numbers of students through UPC which provides a legal value and record to the university that the roll numbers have been duly dispatched.
Thus,in the absence of this service from January this year, all the roll numbers were sent through normal post. More than one lakh students would be appearing for their exams this year in addition to around 17,000 students enrolled in various correspondence courses.
There is certainly a problem in the absence of UPC. University authorities are trying to find a solution for this as some other alternative needs to be worked out, added Prof Bhandari.
