Abhishek Bachchan on Raavan

“It’s neither Mahabharata nor Ramayana, you’re going to get treated to a dose of Raavayana in Raavan,” quips Abhishek Bachchan, when we touch base with him through a video conference at Reliance Webworld in Sector 9. The release of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan is just a week away and the actor is expectedly excited about the project, and more so about his director. “If it’s a Mani Ratnam film,it’s going to be a journey to remember. Anyone would be a fool to say no to him. He holds a very special place for me,he is family. All he has to do is order and I’ll do it,no questions asked,” he says.

The film,he says, has been one of the toughest in his 40-film-career. “Beera’s character is eccentric but multi-dimensional. It has so many facets that it’s difficult to pin-point any one characteristic. When you leave the theatre the perception you have built about him will undergo changes,” he says.

While wife Aishwarya features in both the Hindi and the Tamil versions of the movie, the actor opted out despite saying yes initially. “Aishwarya already knows the language because she has worked in Tamil films, while I have no clue about it. I didn’t want to sound mechanical while delivering my dialogues in a language I am not comfortable with,” he says. However,he admits that making films in two or more languages makes sense in a country as diverse as India. “One gets to reach across the country,” he says.

The actor admits that shooting for the movie in remote areas in central India was a trial — the cast spent a long time walking to locations which were largely rocky, forested and non-motorable terrains, and the make-up took hours — but working with wife Aishwarya again after Guru was special. “Though when we are shooting,we are co-actors,just two professionals working together,” he shrugs.

Up next for Bachchan are a slew of movies, including Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Khele Hum Jee Jaan Se,debutant director Abhimanyu D eo’s Game starring Kangna Ranaut and Sarah Jane,Dostana -II and pal Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maro Dum.
