PUSU members call off hunger strike

After assurance from Panjab University officials of taking action against those guilty in the Boston episode, members of Punjab University Students’ Union called off their hunger strike today.

After assurance from Panjab University officials of taking action against those guilty in the Boston episode, members of Punjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) called off their hunger strike today. Senior university officials told the protesting students that those at fault will be brought to book at the earliest.

PUSU members had gone on indefinite hunger strike on Thursday against alleged inaction by PU officials against the students who went to Boston for a conference in Harvard by “forging documents.”

The protestors, who were sitting outside the vice-chancellor’s office since yesterday said the PU was trying to shield some “outsiders” who were not even students of the university. Simranjit Singh Dhillon, senior member of PUSU alleged that they were manhandled by police officials who were called by the vice-chancellor this morning. “Jagbir Singh,Deputy Superintendent of Police, pushed and shoved us when we were protesting against the matter.

This is not the way to treat students and we will take up the matter with the officials,” Dhillon had said in the morning.

PUSU members also demanded that foreign tours of students be banned so that no one could misuse the institution’s name.
