Pull the string

Puppetry as an art has several strings attached - of art, emotions, games, expression, creativity and story-telling.

Maggie Wilson is here with her solo puppet show Just Enough

Puppetry as an art has several strings attached — of art, emotions, games, expression, creativity and story-telling. “It is an art form that combines other forms like theatre, music and movement. It affects people differently, for each one of us has a unique way of expressing,” says Maggie Wilson,as she puts together her act for the day.

Wilson,a resident of Canada,is here for a ten-day workshop and to present her solo traveling show Just Enough. A puppeteer and educationist, she studied performance puppetry in New York and has been using the medium for the past five years to instruct children. The workshop here at Coveda,in association with the Puppet Theatre,Chandigarh, has been designed to form a creative space with children, initiate them to build a story and tell it through puppet characters.

Just Enough is a puppetry and clown piece about a grandmother and a granddaughter, sharing their stories while making a quilt. “I have adapted it from a folk tale and the story transforms as they both grow together. It has elements that will appeal to varied age groups,” she says. Wilson travels with a small suitcase that comprises a hand-glove mask to portray the grandmother,a clown’s nose, which she adorns when she plays the role of the granddaughter and of course,a small quilt.

Wilson intends to work with both shadow and giant puppets and include games that will help children improvise, emote and communicate. “Children should be made to look around, discover, open up and play. The child is free to imagine and connect. Anyone who has ever had a toy will be able to play with a puppet and make the object perform,” said Wilson. “After India,Just Enough will travel to South Africa for the Out of The Box Festival 2010. I love breathing life into objects,” Wilson says,as she turns to face and entertain her audience.

The free workshop, being held at Coveda from 2 to 4 pm,is open to children between 6 and 14. It will culminate with a puppet show.
