Students of Panjab University will get the opportunity to evaluate their teachers from the next academic session, starting July, with the implementation of a student feedback system.
The proposal was approved in a meeting of the chairpersons, directors and co-ordinators of all departments of the university, chaired by vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Grover, on Friday. The Senate and the Syndicate have already given their approval.
Welcoming the decision, the vice-chancellor said, “Better late than never. It is unfortunate that we implemented it so late. The proposal had been around for a long time. Had we implemented it earlier, we would have got a better ranking.”
Snigdha Bawa, vice-president of the Students’ Council, described the initiative as “appreciable”. She expressed hope that the teachers would take the students’ feedback seriously and try to improve.
Under the system, students with a minimum attendance of 75 per cent in each semester, and no re-appear or compartment in any subject, will fill up a student-feedback form, which will be an OMR sheet, having questions related to the teacher’s performance.
The questions will examine two components, namely the core content and the teaching methodology. These will cover the overall teaching performance of a teacher, including completion of syllabus, preparedness for lectures and the methodology used.
“Students will not be required to write their names, as we intend to keep it confidential in order to prevent any problem for the students,” said Professor Rajat Sandhir, president of the Panjab University Teachers’ Association.
The evaluation will be conducted at the end of each semester. “We plan to show the results to the teachers,” said professor Sandhir.
However, the feedback from students would not carry any weightage in the promotion of teachers, he added.
“The main objective of the exercise is to enable the teachers on the campus to improve their teaching. This will help them to understand the key areas where they need to put in more efforts,” he said.
