The issue of affiliation of the BA,BEd course in the Panjab University (PU) turned into a major protest as the 31 final year students of the four-year integrated course,of which 28 are girls, demanded action for the delay in seventh and eighth semester results.

The students who have threatened to sit on a hunger strike if their issue was not heard and resolved by the authorities called off the protest when the Vice Chancellor Prof R C Sobti assured them that a petition would be filed in the court on Tuesday seeking permission for the declaration of results.

The students were also assured that they can apply and would be eligible for admission in any of the department based on their merit list. The V-C even assured that if required, additional seats would be created to accommodate these students.

The students strongly condemned the lackluster role of the PU authorities and took exception to the fact that that their own university and its departments were making fun of their four years of hard work by not accepting their admission forms on the pretext that it lacks affiliation.

The students blocked the gates of the V-C office along with Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) supporters and rejected to speak to the Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) Prof Naval Kishore on the issue as they complained that nothing came out of their grievances for the last four years. Later, the students were informed that the V-C would listen to any three students, which the students declined and kept blocking the gates of his office.

The authorities claimed that the delay in inspection by NCTE team had resulted in all this chaos. The students were even barred from sitting in their final exams by the department on the pretext that the matter is in the Court. After strong objection by the students, they were allowed to appear for their final exams.

“Now,when the students were looking forward to taking admission into other courses in PU or anywhere else, their result has been stopped and none of the departments of PU are recognising their course,” said PUSU president Sukhjit Singh Brar.

The V-C decided that the students will not be barred from taking admission into any course or department or college affiliated under PU and promised that their withheld result will be out within two days.
