PU exams controller: V-C rejects Parvinder

Punjab University Vice-Chancellor R C Sobti disapproved of Parvinder Singh’s name as Controller of Examinations at the Syndicate meeting held today.

Punjab University (PU) Vice-Chancellor R C Sobti disapproved of Parvinder Singh’s name as Controller of Examinations at the Syndicate meeting held today. Interestingly,he did not inquire whether proof of the allegations against Singh that had been sought from the Syndics at the previous meeting had been submitted.

The disapproval is being seen as an indication of submission by the V-C to the desire of a Senators’ lobby to pave the way for appointment of a particular candidate for the post.

Another related issue that was discussed was the complaint of humiliation of Prof Deepak Kapur (UBS),Faculty of Commerce and Management Dean,by the Selection Committee during the interview for the post of Controller. He had submitted a written complaint to the V-C about the ‘embarrassment’ and ‘humiliation’ he went through when he was asked about the qualification for the post he was appearing for.

Parvinder Singh had been chosen by the Selection Committee as Controller of Examinations last month. He is a lecturer in Chemistry at Post Graduate Government College for Girls,Sector 42. The argument put across by the Syndics today was that a candidate who holds only a lecturer’s position cannot be appointed to such a key administrative post.

At the previous Syndicate meeting held in August, the Syndics had alleged that he was involved in some irregularities in conducting examinations at the college.
