Private schools get more time to comply with RTE norms

Notwithstanding its own commitment made to the high court, the UT Administration has given extension to private schools to file self-declarations,affirming compliance to all provisions of Right to Education Act.

Notwithstanding its own commitment made to the high court, the UT Administration has given extension to private schools to file self-declarations,affirming compliance to all provisions of Right to Education (RTE) Act.

On the last date of hearing, the UT law had officer submitted before the court that the district education officer (DEO) had written to city schools on March 17,asking them to file self-declarations by March 31. If not followed, the schools will not get fresh recognition as required by RTE,the officer had added. With this, the Administration had sought time to place a status report before the court.

On Thursday, however, the UT counsel produced a letter dated April 1 — issued by the DEO to all school heads — extending the time to file self-declarations till May 2. The development took place during the resumed hearing of a petition filed by Advocate Pankaj Chandgothia, seeking directions to all private schools to implement provisions of the RTE Act.

Objecting to the extension,Chandgothia stated that the Administration was playing into the hands of private schools. The court will hear the case again on May 7.

The petition came up for resumed hearing before the recently transferred Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Priti Sahni. Earlier, the case was being heard by Anshul Berry.
