P(R)ETTY CASH

A pedicure for Rs 150,nose piercing for Rs 50,a plate of channa bhatura for Rs 29 — as the new academic year begins, team Talk goes to the campus with just Rs 400 in the pocket.

If there is one thing that’s the highlight of a student’s on-campus life,it is the shoe-string budget that he or she must survive on — keeping a tab on the pennies every day, scrambling for funds for late night coke-and-chips ,maintaining a ‘register’ with the canteenwallah and queuing up for a cheap threading and waxing session with the campus beautician. While campuses across the city are pepping up on amenities, the perennially cash-strapped student has to tally his debit and credit. But as we find out, surprisingly, one can still do a lot with just Rs 400 in the pocket,at least on the Panjab University (PU) campus!

Dress up for a dollar

Even as branded showrooms in Sector 17 announce annual sales, the PU market continues to get a fair share of campus crowd. For it is here that one can choose between harem pants, shorts, bohemian tops and and pajamas, all for less than Rs 200 each. Also up for grabs are funky PU tees for Rs 250 each and capris for just Rs 100. “While most stores here have put up a ‘No Bargain’ board,we offer discount if the students buy in bulk,” says Krishan Lal,owner of Bizzaree, even as Manmohan Sethi of Mod Fashioners flaunts a range of tunics for Rs 150 and shorts for Rs 100. Our pick? A floral dress in white and green, which (after much haggling) came for Rs 180.

Chew on this

If you are on PU campus, you just cannot ignore the food court — Students Centre. Popularly addressed as Stucee,a large glass of cold coffee here comes just for Rs 30. And if you are famished with all that shopping under the sun, there are also endless eating options. A plate of pani poori for Rs 20,channa bhatura for Rs 29 and Amritsari Kulcha for Rs 37. But for those who stay away from the Punjabi cuisine, there are over 15 types of grilled sandwiches to choose from. But we stick to the rajma-chawal combo — served with sliced onions, green chillies and curd, with mint chutney on the side. As for beverages, there’s a keen contest between an array of juices and jaljeera, while the regulars bet on a glass of lassi. Total expenditure: Rs 42.

Beautiful Deals

After fashion and food, how about a quick-fix beauty treatment? We walk across to Sweety Sandu’s Saloon at Kasturba Hostel. Nestled in a corner,in a rather crammed place,a pedicure here costs Rs 150 — albeit complete with foot massage, cleaning and scrubbing. As for piercing,it comes for Rs 50. “We keep the rates low keeping students in mind,” says Sandu,as she pierces the ear of 21-year-old Amrita Singh at four places. If “rumours” are to be believed,Panjab University is all set to get its first tattoo artist next month. For now,we settle for nose piercing at Rs 50.

souvenir to keep

As we decide to walk out of the campus, there should be something we can take home — perhaps a ceramic mug with our pictures imprinted on it — for Rs 150. With a variety of cups to choose from, these have become quite popular with the students. On students’ demand,we are also going to start printing their pictures on T-shirts and ceramic plates,” says Sukhvir, the owner of Sukhvir Studios.
