Congress puts up united front at Ropar rally

In a scathing attack on the ruling SAD-BJP alliance,Punjab Congress president and former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh said the party would move the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the scam in the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC). He said PPSC was a constitutional body and the government was trying to suppress it by building up pressure on its members either to submit to their diktats or quit.

Amarinder, who was addressing a rally in Ropar on Tuesday, said: “They (the government) have prepared a list of beneficiaries, but where are the names of the sons and daughters of three political leaders — Paramjit Kaur Gulshan,MP from Ferozepur,Balbir Singh Baath and Nirmal Singh Kahlon. The Akalis want to appoint their own people in the PPSC as they have been trying hard to replace the old appointees for more than two years.”

He said the Congress would establish a commission after coming to power and act against the police officers and Akalis who harassed Congress workers and leaders.

Taking a dig at the “hollow claims” of development made by Badals and the BJP in various parts of the state,Amarinder said the state was in a total mess on all fronts — be it agriculture, industry or infrastructure. He said: “Punjab is lagging behind in every field and its situation is worse than Bihar. There is no law and order in the state. There is a need for industrial and agricultural revolution. Paddy counts to only 3 per cent of the economy and industry is shifting to Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.”

Talking about south Punjab,he said: “The cases of cancer are increasing by the day but no cancer research centre has been established. Surinder Kaur Badal (Chief Minister Parkash Singh’s wife) has also been suffering from cancer and her treatment expenses are being borne by the state government, but not a single penny is being spent on the other people suffering from the dreaded disease.

Addressing the rally earlier,Leader of the Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal criticised Badals for “not fulfilling any of their promises made in the election manifesto”. Making fun of Sukhbir Singh Badal’s recent statement that there will be surplus electricity in Punjab in the next two years, she said: “But who will allow him to rule till then. His own cousin has opened a front against him.”

Demonstrating the unity in Congress, she said: “There may be differences of opinion at times, but one should not think that Congress is divided. We are firmly united to rule for another 30 years after defeating the Akalis.”
