Bollywood’s most bejewelled mom — Kirron Kher — is a self-confessed news freak. That’s how she describes herself. Wearing her big,dimpled smile,as winsome in person as on screen,Kirron was in the city for an event at a local school. She said that most of her time does not go into watching movies or theatre,but switching between news channels. “I am a permanent invitee to the BJP national executive meetings,and this is a role that I take very seriously. I am completely aware of each political issue in the country,and how it is developing,” said Kirron.

So how does she portray the comic,sometimes irrational mother,on screen so well? “Well,that’s what acting is all about,isn’t it?” she shoots back with a smile. And who is the better actor? She or her husband,the celebrated actor Anupam Kher? “I am,” she says with a twinkle in her eye.

Kirron has done both her school and college in Chandigarh,and later studied at the Department of Indian Theatre in Panjab University. Considering that she is a popular public figure and has interest in politics,does she have plans to galvanise the BJP in Chandigarh? The party has consistently lost to the Congress in the parliamentary elections in the last few years. But Kirron specifies that she isn’t ready to take the electoral plunge. “I am not ready for it,and I have no such plans either,” she says clearly as she enjoys her stardom and signs autographs for the children,youngsters and women who throng her whenever she visits Chandigarh.
